My 3 year old son has spina bifida so as much as I am a health care professional I am also a medical mama and understand the challenges of healthcare. As a school nurse I was the advisor for HOSA (health occupations students of America) for 3 years and led my students to nationals 3 years straight. I was named SD Advisor of the Year.

Brandy Smith

This year, I’m celebrating my 20th year in graduating from SDSU with my MSN in the FNP tract.  I spent the majority of my career at Sioux/Valley Sanford working in the endocrinology specialty.  8 years ago, I chose a change in my career path and have focused on work in biological research in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, as a medical science liaison.  My patient care practice is currently at South Dakota Urban Indian Health and I have practiced there since 2014.  This has allowed me to continue focusing on chronic disease management, along with the chance to help develop a diabetes prevention and education program. A career highlight was being awarded the South Dakota Diabetes Coalition Service Award in 2019, for this endeavor.  My passion has been that of volunteering and providing healthcare to the underserved, as well as education and mentoring.  In 2023, I was awarded the Spirit of Volunteerism Award from the Sioux Falls Helpline.

I have served as Treasurer of the NPASD organization from 2020-2024 (soon to complete my 2nd term).  I am now running for Board Member At Large, for the upcoming 2024-2026 term.   I am running for this position for several reasons.  First, I see that there is a lot of growth opportunity for our organization and have seen impressive momentum in the past several years, that needs to keep moving forward.  Second, our organization is instrumental in legislative action in our State and given upcoming initiatives, it is important to have members engaged and responsive to these needs.  Lastly, NPASD has been an organization that I’ve been proud to belong to over the years and I want to give back my time and energy to an organization that continues to serve my advocacy and practice needs.  For these reasons, I’d appreciate your vote for NPASD Board Member at Large.
