Additional Information

Attention South Dakota PA-C's and NP's,

The SDSMA and the SDAFP along with the SD State Health Department are offering the American Society of Addictive Medicine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder Training.

The training is available for all MD, DO, PA-C and NP providers in South Dakota and surrounding states.  The SD Department of health is offering to pay for the first 30 SD qualified health care providers who register for the training course so if you register early you can attend at N/C.  (The cost of the course is $199)

As you can see on the brochure we have an online registration set up.  If you register using the SD choice it will automatically register the first 30 people at N/C- once those spots are filled it will give out a message to call the SDAFP office for registration information.

As a PA-C or NP in order to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to patients with opioid use disorders you will need to complete this course and an  additional 16 hours of online training.  This training will be available at no additional charge on the ASAM website.

The funding will be on a first come first serve basis.  The training will be Saturday, June 2, in Sioux Falls, SD.  See the attached flyer for details.

A Few More Details:

Course Description

This course covers all medications and treatments for opioid use disorder, and provides the required education needed to obtain the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. ASAM is an approved provider by CSAT/SAMHSA of DATA 2000 training.

To qualify for a waiver, NPs and PAs must:

  • Be licensed under state law to prescribe Schedule III, IV, or V medications for pain
  • Complete not less than 24 hours of appropriate education through a qualified provider
  • Through other training or experience, demonstrate the ability to treat and manage OUD
  • If required by state law, be supervised or work in collaboration with a qualifying physician to prescribe medications for the treatment of OUD

Please ensure that your state regulations allow you to prescribe buprenorphine and other medications to treat Opioid Use Disorder before you apply for the waiver. Some states may have overriding state legislation that will prevent NPs/PAs from prescribing these medications even if Federal law allows it. Click here to learn more about applying for the waiver.

This training is divided into two parts of 8 hours and 16 hours. We are offering the 8-hour DATA2000 course, you will only need to complete the second part of the 16-hour course.
